Twelve recipients were selected this year to receive grants for their activities fostering and promoting scholastic success for farmworkers and their families. In total $27,000 was awarded in community & school grants to program providers through the WAEF Farmworker/Ag Worker Education program this year.
The WAEF selection committee made award decisions focusing on the four key priorities of the grant program: to reduce high school drop-out rates and improve higher level education achievement rates of at-risk students; to improve long-term learning outcomes through access to effective early education programs; to increase economic self-sufficiency and further generational upward mobility; and to improve cross-cultural communications through English language literacy.
Early Education
Orondo School District’s Ready for Kindergarten program received $3550 for program supplies and staffing needs.
Catholic Family & Child Services Child Care Resource & Referral received $2000 each for the needs of their Monitor Play & Learn and Toppenish Play & Learn programs.
La Casa Hogar (Yakima Interfaith Coalition) received $2000 for early education preparedness for families involved in adult programs through the home.
Yakima Neighborhood Health received $1000 for the purchase of books for young patients learning to read.
Dual Language Learning
Moxee Elementary was awarded $2224 to purchase library and classroom supplies in Spanish for its dual language student body.
At-Risk Youth
Central Washington University received $2500 for the Breaking Boundaries program in Brewster helping Hispanic male and female teens build self-esteem and learn about life’s opportunities.
Columbia Elementary School (Wenatchee) received $2500 for an accelerated reading program.
Cascade School District (Leavenworth) received $1500 for the hiring of a Spanish-speaking tutor in the after-school program.
Adult ESL
Lake Chelan School District was selected to receive $2904 for its parent empowerment program.
Friends of Buena Library received $2452 for an eight-week Adult ESL course concentrating on basic conversation and job related communication.
Literacy Council of Chelan and Douglas Counties (Wenatchee) received $3000 for student program needs.
