105 Students Depart for College this Fall with Scholarship from Washington’s Tree Fruit Industry
Washington’s tree fruit industry is assisting 105 students this fall with scholarships valued at $350,000 through the industry’s charitable foundation, the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF). In total, 120 scholarships were awarded to this year’s group of students, the highest number in the Foundation’s history.
“This is the year students needed us to come through for them. We are so pleased that industry support allowed us to increase our financial assistance to students,” stated WAEF Chairman Ruth Pringle. “With rising tuition rates and struggles in the economy, our goal is to make sure students from tree fruit districts don’t pay the price with their futures,” she added.
Awards range in size from $500 to full-ride, multi-year awards. A volunteer committee of the WAEF makes award determinations utilizing the students’ scholastic records, extra-curricular activities and leadership roles, financial need, essays, etc. Each award has its own set of criteria and selection priorities established by the scholarship sponsor.
