WAEF honors exceptional young minds at Mid-Columbia Science Fair Wenatchee, Wash . . . Young minds querying subjects such as "What effect will interfering agents have on the crystallization of lollipops?"; "Which solar oven will generate the most watts?"; What is the effect of citric acid on the browning of apples?" assembled in Kennewick for the annual Mid-Columbia Regional Science and Engineering Fair on March 8th to showcase their scientific prowess. Ten 6th-8th grade students were recognized by the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) for their project entries in the Food and Agriculture category with certificates of achievement and $40 book store gift cards. There were a total of 293 projects presented overall in the Food and Agriculture category. Sue Graf, Process Development Scientist at Tree Top, Inc., and John Baranowski, Ph. D., Tree Top, Inc. Corporate Technical Service Manager, judged the contest. "It was another big year at the science fair. The kids are always a delight to talk with about their projects. Project topics range from storage and preservation of apples to surveys of enzymes that act as antioxidants, and of course lots of plant growth studies. These types of projects provide students an opportunity to investigate as they start to ask their own questions about how and why things happen around them," stated Baranowski. The 2012 Mid-Columbia Science Fair Food & Agriculture Category honorable mention recipients are Allison Davis from Harrison Middle School in Sunnyside; Anneka Walton from Chief Joseph Middle School in Richland; Haley Coleman and Naveena Bontha from Enterprise Middle School in Richland; Molly Wireman, Kassidy Weber and Nathan Lipton from Carmichael Middle School in Richland; Emma Lascar and Elise Knudson from West Valley Middle School in Yakima and Jenna Russell from Desert Hills Middle School in Kennewick. North Central Washington Speller to travel to National Spelling Bee   March 21, 2012   Wenatchee, Wash... Caveat, collage, abdicate, daffodil, fete are a few of the challenging words competitors were asked to spell at the North Central Washington Regional Spelling Bee held last evening in East Wenatchee. 58 students from grades 4th - 8th participated in the spelling bee representing schools in Okanogan, Grant, Chelan and Douglas counties.  Each of the participants earned their place in the regional spelling bee by scoring as one of the top two spellers in their local, school spelling bee. The NCW Regional Spelling Bee, held at Eastmont Junior High School, was sponsored and coordinated by the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF).  The format was of a traditional "spelldown" with each student receiving one word per round.  At the end of each round, those who spelled their words correctly continued onto the next round.  Approximately 300 guests filled the auditorium to cheer on the spellers. The winning word was indubitable for Jonah Gunter, a seventh grade student from Leavenworth, who survived 15  rounds to capture this year's title and win a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC in May.

Deadline approaches to compete for Washington Apple Education Foundation scholarships January 19, 2012 Wenatchee, Wash... The deadline for students to return completed scholarship applications to the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) is approaching. Completed WAEF scholarship applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2012 to qualify for 2012-13 school year scholarships. Graduating high school seniors and students currently enrolled in college may be eligible for over $400,000 expected to be awarded by WAEF this year. The scholarship application is available at www.waef.org under the website's scholarship menu. This is also where interested students can go to learn more about award qualifications. The WAEF expects to award approximately 150 scholarships this year to students raised in Washington's fruit growing regions. Washington Apple Education Foundation Accounting Scholarships Available January 16, 2012 Wenatchee, Wash... The Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) has available two unique scholarships for accounting students from North Central Washington. The Stemilt Growers, Inc. Accounting Scholarship is open to college students with a declared accounting major entering their junior, senior or fifth year. In addition to the $2,500 scholarship award, students will participate in an eight- to ten-week internship in the accounting department at Stemilt's Wenatchee headquarters. Applicants must have ties to North Central Washington. Moss Adams LLP has a WAEF scholarship in honor of retired partner E. Peter Krier. This $500 scholarship is open to college juniors, seniors, or fifth year students from the Yakima Valley, enrolled in a university in Washington state pursuing a degree in accounting.  
Need Money for College? Free Seminars Planned to Assist College Bound Families December 20, 2011 Wenatchee, WA... The Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) has planned a series of free seminars aimed to assist parents and high school seniors with the rising costs of college tuition. The purpose of the seminars is to provide valuable tips to students on how to complete award winning scholarship applications and assist parents with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application. • Who: Students, parents and anyone interested in learning how to pay for college. • What: Three seminars each night will take place at the same time in different rooms. A scholarship training seminar will help students learn how to get scholarship dollars and the two other seminars will help parents learn how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), presented in both English and Spanish.

 Golf Tournaments Raise $100,000 for the Washington Apple Education Foundation

     Wenatchee, WA… Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) golfers participated in two golf tournaments this summer supporting the good works of the tree fruit industry’s charity.  The first tournament took place in East Wenatchee at the Wenatchee Golf & Country Club on June 7th.  The second tournament was on July 21st at the Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.  Both tournaments were sponsored by Wilbur Ellis and Valent USA.  Combined they netted approximately $100,000 for scholarship and educational programs benefiting tree fruit industry families and students. 
     Wenatchee tournament Chairman Jim Wade shared, “When we started this organization seventeen years ago we knew we had industry backing.  I don’t know that any of us really understood just how much industry members would get behind the Foundation.  It’s wonderful to see the same sponsors coming back year after year to support WAEF through the golf tournament.”
    Peter Verbrugge, tournament chairman for the Yakima, added “Several students volunteer at the golf tournaments.  It’s rewarding to see these students wanting to connect with industry members and adding to efforts to raise funds for future scholarships.  I am really appreciative of the industry’s combined commitment to WAEF.”
     Four teams took the top honors in the Wenatchee Golf & Country Club Golf Tournament. The BASF team of Marc Armstrong, Kevin Benson, Marty Robinson and Bob Jerry Evans and the Wilbur-Ellis Company team of Shawn Ward, Bob Mast, Doug Wiggins and Jay Goetzinger achieved low net bragging rights.  Winners of the low gross category were the Aweta Autoline team of players Jeff Heil, Don Gibson, Ron Wyles and John Harris and the Dow AgroScience team represented by Lee Gale, Neil Johnson, Aaron Gale and Greg McPherson.
     Course contests at the Wenatchee Golf & Country Club tournament were sponsored by Bayer CropScience. Winners included: Shawn Ward- Closest to the Pin; Greg McPherson- Accurate Drive; Rachel Darlington- Women’s Long Drive; Clay Gebbers- Men’s Long Drive; and Tracy King- Longest Putt.  The Poker Run best hand went to Dean Benson with Tory Wulf and Jim LaPonte coming in 2nd and 3rd.  Jaime Jamison was this year’s grand raffle prize winner of a set of Taylor Made R-11 woods and driver sponsored by SmartFresh.
     The 10th annual Apple Cup Putting Challenge was presented by Keyes Fibre Corporation on the putting green prior to the tournament.  Players represented either Washington State University or University of Washington in a friendly putting competition.  Ross Riedinger was the top Husky player and Tory Wulf was awarded as the top Cougar player.
     Top place teams at the Apple Tree tournament included the team of Kailan Dunn, Andrew Sundquist, Mel Brink and Gerald Besel playing for Banner Bank and of Rich Gonzales, Donna Feltrup, John Long and Andrew Eakin on the L&M Companies sponsored team.  Low gross honors were captured by the team of Bryan Riel, Dusty Frontis, Joe Plasanince and Corey deGrood sponsored by Burrows Tractor and the First Fruits Marketing #2 team represented by Joe Cozzetto, Allyn Griffin, Mark Blore and Mark Lundberg.
     ProNatural presented the Apple Tree tournament course contests. Winners included: Donna Drury- Closest to the Pin; Ben Cox-Accurate Drive; Pat Wehr- Women’s Long Drive; Dusty Frontis- Men’s Long Drive and Craig Tullis- Longest Putt.  Joe Cozzetto was the winner of the Poker Run sponsored by C.M. Holtzinger Fruit, 2nd and 3rd place went to Doug Snipes and John Kupanoff.  Bayer CropScience sponsored the tournament’s grand raffle prize which was a Taylor Made R-11 driver and set woods won by Phil DiPofi.
     Dolco Packaging was the sponsor of the pre-tournament Putting Challenge.  This contest recognized the top three putters: Peter Verbrugge, Jim Hansen and Lilian Joselin.
