WAEF honors exceptional young minds at Mid-Columbia Science Fair Wenatchee, Wash . . . Young minds querying subjects such as "What effect will interfering agents have on the crystallization of lollipops?"; "Which solar oven will generate the most watts?"; What is the effect of citric acid on the browning of apples?" assembled in Kennewick for the annual Mid-Columbia Regional Science and Engineering Fair on March 8th to showcase their scientific prowess. Ten 6th-8th grade students were recognized by the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) for their project entries in the Food and Agriculture category with certificates of achievement and $40 book store gift cards. There were a total of 293 projects presented overall in the Food and Agriculture category. Sue Graf, Process Development Scientist at Tree Top, Inc., and John Baranowski, Ph. D., Tree Top, Inc. Corporate Technical Service Manager, judged the contest. "It was another big year at the science fair. The kids are always a delight to talk with about their projects. Project topics range from storage and preservation of apples to surveys of enzymes that act as antioxidants, and of course lots of plant growth studies. These types of projects provide students an opportunity to investigate as they start to ask their own questions about how and why things happen around them," stated Baranowski. The 2012 Mid-Columbia Science Fair Food & Agriculture Category honorable mention recipients are Allison Davis from Harrison Middle School in Sunnyside; Anneka Walton from Chief Joseph Middle School in Richland; Haley Coleman and Naveena Bontha from Enterprise Middle School in Richland; Molly Wireman, Kassidy Weber and Nathan Lipton from Carmichael Middle School in Richland; Emma Lascar and Elise Knudson from West Valley Middle School in Yakima and Jenna Russell from Desert Hills Middle School in Kennewick. Sponsors of the Mid-Columbia Science Fair Food & Agriculture awards include Graham Packaging Company, G. S. Long Company, Larson Fruit Company, Lewis & Clark I.F.T., Puget Sound Institute of Technology, Tree Top, Inc., Valley Research, Yakima Pomological Club and International Paper. North Central Washington Speller to travel to National Spelling Bee   March 21, 2012   Wenatchee, Wash... Caveat, collage, abdicate, daffodil, fete are a few of the challenging words competitors were asked to spell at the North Central Washington Regional Spelling Bee held last evening in East Wenatchee. 58 students from grades 4th - 8th participated in the spelling bee representing schools in Okanogan, Grant, Chelan and Douglas counties.  Each of the participants earned their place in the regional spelling bee by scoring as one of the top two spellers in their local, school spelling bee. The NCW Regional Spelling Bee, held at Eastmont Junior High School, was sponsored and coordinated by the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF).  The format was of a traditional "spelldown" with each student receiving one word per round.  At the end of each round, those who spelled their words correctly continued onto the next round.  Approximately 300 guests filled the auditorium to cheer on the spellers. The winning word was indubitable for Jonah Gunter, a seventh grade student from Leavenworth, who survived 15  rounds to capture this year's title and win a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC in May.

Deadline approaches to compete for Washington Apple Education Foundation scholarships January 19, 2012 Wenatchee, Wash... The deadline for students to return completed scholarship applications to the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) is approaching. Completed WAEF scholarship applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2012 to qualify for 2012-13 school year scholarships. Graduating high school seniors and students currently enrolled in college may be eligible for over $400,000 expected to be awarded by WAEF this year. The scholarship application is available at www.waef.org under the website's scholarship menu. This is also where interested students can go to learn more about award qualifications. The WAEF expects to award approximately 150 scholarships this year to students raised in Washington's fruit growing regions. Accounting Scholarship is open to college students with a declared accounting major entering their junior, senior or fifth year. In addition to the $2,500 scholarship award, students will participate in an eight- to ten-week internship in the accounting department at Stemilt's Wenatchee headquarters. Applicants must have ties to North Central Washington. Moss Adams LLP has a WAEF scholarship in honor of retired partner E. Peter Krier. This $500 scholarship is open to college juniors, seniors, or fifth year students from the Yakima Valley, enrolled in a university in Washington state pursuing a degree in accounting.  
Need Money for College? Free Seminars Planned to Assist College Bound Families December 20, 2011 Wenatchee, WA... The Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) has planned a series of free seminars aimed to assist parents and high school seniors with the rising costs of college tuition. The purpose of the seminars is to provide valuable tips to students on how to complete award winning scholarship applications and assist parents with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application. • Who: Students, parents and anyone interested in learning how to pay for college. • What: Three seminars each night will take place at the same time in different rooms. A scholarship training seminar will help students learn how to get scholarship dollars and the two other seminars will help parents learn how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), presented in both English and Spanish.
 

Washington Apple Education Foundation Accounting Scholarships Available

Wenatchee, Wash... The Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) has available two unique scholarships for accounting students from North Central Washington.

The Stemilt Growers, Inc. Accounting Scholarship is open to college students with a declared accounting major entering their junior, senior or fifth year. In addition to the $2,500 scholarship award, students will participate in an eight- to ten-week internship in the accounting department at Stemilt's Wenatchee headquarters. Applicants must have ties to North Central Washington.

Moss Adams LLP has a WAEF scholarship in honor of retired partner E. Peter Krier. This $500 scholarship is open to college juniors, seniors, or fifth year students from the Yakima Valley, enrolled in a university in Washington state pursuing a degree in accounting.

To apply for these scholarships for the 2012-13 academic school year or learn more about award qualifications, visit www.waef.org. Students applying for either the Stemilt Accounting or Moss Adams LLP/E. Peter Krier scholarship must use the 2012 WAEF Universal Scholarship Application located under the scholarship tab of the WAEF website.

In addition to these two accounting scholarships, tree fruit industry firms and families offer a variety of other scholarships through WAEF. Information on each scholarship offered through the WAEF can be found at www.waef.org under the scholarships tab. Students must return completed scholarship applications to the WAEF office no later than March 1, 2012 for consideration. Awards decisions will be announced in May.

Currently 151 students are on college campuses with WAEF scholarships. The Foundation awarded approximately $425,000 in scholarships to students for the 2011-12 school year.
